MAJOR GENERAL STEPHEN PORTER AM

“TRANSFORMATION OF THE ARMY RESERVE MOVING TOWARD A TOTAL FORCE”

 

Major General Stephen Porter, AM graduated from the Royal Military College in 1983. Major General Porter was appointed to the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment. He served with the Royal Australian Regiment again as Adjutant, Company Commander and Operations Officer of the 8th/9th Battalion. He served twice with the Reserve, as Adjutant 5th/6th Battalion, The Royal Victoria Regiment and Commanding Officer of the integrated 25th/49th Battalion, the Royal Queensland Regiment.

In 1990 he served with the United Nations in Iran and was again overseas from 1997 to 1998 in the United States as the Australian exchange officer on the headquarters of the 1st US Corps. In this appointment his primary responsibility was as the lead planner for operations in Korea. For this service he was awarded the United States Army Meritorious Service Medal.

From 2003 to 2004 Major General Porter served as the Australian Exchange Directing Staff at the United Kingdom Joint Service Command and Staff College. On return to Australia, he assumed the appointment as Director Future Warfighting and Joint Experimentation. In November 2005 he took up the appointment as Deputy Chief of Staff the Multi National Force – Iraq. This appointment had significant operations and plans focus. For this service he was awarded the United States Bronze Star Medal.

His senior appointments include Deputy Commander  11 Brigade & Assistant Commander Training 11 Brigade from 2008 to 2009, Assistant Commander (Training) 2 Division in 2010 and Commander 11 Brigade from 2012 to 2014. On the 1st January 2015 he took command of the 2nd Division.

Major General Porter was awarded as a Member (AM) in the Military Division of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday List 2014. He is married to Anita, they have 4 children and he is involved in rugby union and cricket.
