The Council is delighted to announce a presentation by historian, author and commercial tour operator Mr David Howell, who will speak on security and stability in PNG.
The relationship between Australia and PNG is long standing and important to both countries: strong historic, geographic, economic and strategic links have been sustained by mutual interest. But with criminal activity prevalent in PNG, and with tourism and travel to PNG (particularly across the Kokoda Track) more popular that ever, the safety and security of Australians has increasingly been a concern.
David will talk through the most pressing barriers to business and the safety of individual Australian tourists in this spectacular but impoverished country. He will cover off his experiences of the obvious and not so apparent risks that present themselves to Australian enterprises (and individuals) operating (most notably) along the Kokoda track.
What supports are/have been provided by local PNG authorities and/or the Australian Government? Are these having an effect on the ground? What might be provided to local PNG government to improve the situation? What can be done? In light of the recent Mendi earthquake these issues are more topical than ever.
David will offer an Australian perspective gathered from dozens of overland journeys through some of the most challenging, culturally diverse places on Earth.
This presentation will be held in the Spender Theatre at the Australian Defence College, Weston Creek, commencing at 1800 hours. This event is free, but registration is required either on our website here or by contacting our office (E: email@example.com; T 02 6266 3446)
Members and guests are reminded that photo ID is required for access to the Weston Creek campus.
