Professor Richard Rigby is the Executive Director, ANU China Institute, Professorial Fellow, Crawford School of Public Policy, and Associate Director, Centre on China in the World at the ANU. Richard was with DFAT from 1975 to 2001, postings including Tokyo, Beijing (twice), Shanghai (Consul-General 1994-1998), London, and Israel (Ambassador, 2000-2001).

2 October 2014 - Professor Greg Fealy, ANU, spoke on: Future Political Situation in Indonesia

25 September - At our Annnual Dinner,conducted as a Joint Dinner with the National Council of the RUSI Australia, Senator the Hon. Michael Ronaldson Minister for Veterans' Affairs, addressed the combined membership. The USI of ACT Patron presented the 2014 Leo Mahony Scholarship Winner, Ms Sheryn with her award - a $5,000 Bursary for her PhD studies, jointly funded by USI of ACT and Roll-Royce Australia.

1 September 2014 - White Paper Community Consultation - Meeting with Expert Team

130 Members of Kokoda, USI of ACT, and the general public attended a meeting with the Defence WP Expert Team to privide their views on what should be addressed in the 2015 Defence White Paper on Defence.

9 April 2014 The Hon Sir Charles Haddon-Cave spoke on: Defence Aviation and Air Force Safety

  The Hon Sir Charles Haddon-Cave QC

The Hon Mr Justice Haddon-Cave, is a British judge who serves on the Queen’s Bench Division of the High Court of England and Wales. Sir Charles was appointed by the United Kingdom (UK) Secretary of State for Defence to conduct The Nimrod Review into loss of RAF Nimrod MR2 aircraft XV230 in Afghanistan (2007–2009). This review; colloquially known as the Haddon-Cave Report identified weaknesses within the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) which weakened the MOD’s safety and airworthiness regime.

3 April 2014 - Mr Andrew Balmaks, spoke on: The Changing Face of the ADF’s Command and Control Arrangements

The ADF’s command and control arrangements have been evolving since the 1970s. Over the past 10 years significant change has occurred with the establishment of the Joint Operations Command at Bungendore and the Military Strategic Commitments Division in Canberra. These arrangements have now been tested on operations in Timor Leste, the Solomon Islands, Iraq and Afghanistan; and on Australia’s border security tasking.
