RUSI of Tasmania

Brief History

The United Service Institute of Tasmania was founded in Hobart in 1924 and a Branch formed in Launceston, in the north of the state, in 1934.

Over the years many distinguished Tasmanians served the Institute as Presidents and Committee Members.

In the early 1980s a decision was taken to form a State Council and to create a ‘Hobart Branch’ to be on the same footing as the Branch in Launceston.  A new Constitution was drawn up and approved and a State President was appointed to head the State Council.  A State Secretary was also appointed to act as the Executive Officer of the RUSI of Tasmania.  The State Council Consists of those two office bearers plus the two Branch Presidents plus two representatives from each Branch Committee.

The ‘Royal’ prefix was granted in 1975 and the Institute incorporated in 2002.  The body is now The Royal United Service Institute of Tasmania Inc.

Each Branch is autonomous in the planning and execution of its local program save that the State Council assists with the co-ordination and attendance of interstate speakers and is the conduit between the Branches and the National Body.

The Branches meet as follows:

Launceston:  The third Wednesday in each month (save January and December) and meets at 7.30 pm in the Paterson Barracks Officers Bar facility, St John Street LAUNCESTON  TAS  7250

Hobart:  The third Thursday in each month (save January and December each year) and meets at 7.00 pm in the Flexible Learning Centre Theatrette in Anglesea Barracks, Davey Street, HOBART  TAS  7000

Both Branches maintain a comprehensive military library with some very valuable books held.  Some DVDs and Video cassettes are held as part of the library service.

The State Secretary is:
